Happy Independence Day

Liberty Island, NY - February, 1985

I remember three things very clearly when I took these. It was cold. And windy. And the scaffolding swayed.

But what a piece of history of which you played a part. First three shots are amazing. Have a great Fourth.

That first photo is amazing. I can only imagine how much the scaffolding swayed. She has big toes, too.

Tin Tin, Back in 1980 I was dating a woman who told me her family used to live in apartments on Liberty Island. Her father had some kind of job with the city or park service, I don't recall which. She said that Life magazine did a story on their family years before. How they took a ferry to school each day, etc. Do you have any knowledge of the apartments? Also have you heard of the Life article. I have searched and not been able to find it myself. Dave

Dave- Yep. There was park housing on Liberty Island. Only NPS employees and there were not many openings. You were lucky to get it although getting back and forth to the city was a major pain.

There was some coopertaion with the NPS and Coast Guard on Governer's Island I seem to recall. I don't remember a story in Life but wouldn't be surprised.

I do remember having a huge problem with my checks. Had some printed up before I left for NY and because I hadn't found an apt yet, I had the bank use my work address: Liberty Island, NY, NY. Not a good idea.

Hey, FC & BF- Can you help David with the magazine? These are NPS friends I worked with at the Statue and not magazine sellers.

Please remind everybody she was a gift from the French.
Now I'm not French, but with all the Gulf War France hating in the USA I think you've [USA] been bloody ungrateful to them!
And isn't she something!

Tin Tin, Thanks for the reply. Perhaps the next time I am in the library I will check into the microfilm archives for the article.
