Hot, hot, hot, hot... Chocolate

In a city where a Remy Side Car goes for $23 in the King Cole Bar, an $8 cup of hot chocolate isn't that crazy. Not for what it is: thick goopy elegance that coats your mouth in a smooth layer of cocoa-sin. It's really something of a bargain for anyone used to living in NYC. Or, maybe I've been here too long.

Maison Du Chocolate is in the T.A.O. (Tourist Area of Operations). 30 Rockefeller Center (at 49th) and most folk, fresh from shaking signs at the Today Show, are scared off by the prices. For me, it's a convenient location on a cold and rainy afternoon. The kind of afternoon made for a Nooner at the Algonquin. But if you can't do that -- drinking hot chocolate at Maison Du Chocolate is the next best thing. Maybe it's the fourth best thing. Certainly it's in the top ten.

A nooner at The Algonquin? Is that in the bar or are you talking about getting a room?

Longwing- I was thinking of a room but you just came up with a great new cocktail. That I'll promptly steal.

This makes me miss the Lindt cafe on Martin Place in Sydney. The pure melted Lindt for the hot chocolate is decadently good. And the cafe is in an old bank with super high ceilings and big windows letting in lots of natural light.

A few years ago we spent Thanksgiving in New York. I thought we had done and seen everything (Macy's parade, the Rockettes, etc). And even though we went to Rockefeller Center, we never saw the crazy people for the Today Show. I guess we'll have to go back some time. One surprise: how small the ice rink was. On TV it looks a lot bigger.

I love the way you write. Now I need hot chocolate! Peppermint schnapps! Gotta put peppermint schnapps in it! Maybe smuggle the schnapps inside in a flask... wiggle your eyebrows at the missus, cast them furtively about the shop, and then spike her chocolate! Very flash.

We put peppermint schnapps in hot chocolate....and we call it a "Girl Scout Cookie" as it tastes just like the thin mint on GSC fame!

I was at a meeting last night that happened to be at someone's house...the host made me a hot choc with peppermint schnapps in it - I was feeling pretty good by the time we left!

Gee, I'm still telling people about the $10.00 gelato in Milan. Imagine my surprise hearing about the eight dollar cocoa.

Down here in humble Baltimore we buy our Droste chocolate & make the cocoa ourselves. Merry Christmas!

Peppermint Schnaps! Now, there the thing. I'm off out to get some of that.

Well, I spit my tea out all over the computer screen about "nooner at the Algonquin". I thought that was a secret of NY-ers. Going to have to head to the Maison Du Chocolate tomorrow, when I am in that neck of the woods. Thanks!
