Tunes I Can't Stop...

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

...listening to. Over and over and over...French guys singing in English? A drummer who can play and dance at the same time? Merde! They're addictive as pomme frites and twice as salty.

Did not expect to see Phoenix when I loaded up the front page of the trad, but it's a welcome surprise. Wolfgang Amadeus is one of those albums where you can keep the entire thing on repeat and it never gets old.

Great song. Love the 80s vibe. Reminds me simultaneously of Tom Petty's "American Girl" and The Housemartins' "Happy Hour".

Apparently, there's a viral video of this song cut to "vintage" John Hughes movies like Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club. The band prefer it to their professionally produced video.

Anon 19:30 - Just found them a couple of weeks ago. Amazing echos of the 80's.

Ben- You're always on the cutting edge. Posted the video once you gave the heads up. Great stuff.

What do you call a New Wave revival? Old Wave?

you're lucky. I have had 'i know there's something going on' by freida (lead singer of abba) in my head for FIVE days .. the only think that got it out was going to the website of julie and julia and listening to that soundtrack, which is rather catcy.

Phoenix is a great pop band. Their first record and this last are their best, I think. And the lucky Thomas Mars is married to the tres jolie [or jolie-laide?] Sophia Coppola.

If you're looking for more relatively young pop-rock bands with an 80s vibe - try Cut Copy.

I first heard Phoenix in 1997 or 1998 when they did some live shows with the French band Air.

LBT - Phoenix recently did a great live cover of Air's "Playground Love."
