and Automobiles

No pretensions here. It's a station wagon with over 100,000 miles. The Brits call it an estate. They also call a back yard a garden and a tent a marquis. This wagon is full of crap for the month of August. This is a car that not only sucks up massive amounts of crap in the back but gobbles up highway miles, appears to be invisible to the police and thanks to the hunter green paint job, disappears on the highway at dusk. Still, I love it although I'm not sure why. After dealing with the Planes and the Trains - - it's nice to sit in, as my friend Wally calls it, "quiet elegance" while listening to the Clash on it's amazing Bose stereo.

Come on, Tintin. Do you really not know why you love an old MB station wagon, one probably made before Chrysler bought the company?

As the fellow owner of an ancient Mercedes, kudos on your fine choice. Mine's a dinged-up Clinton-era dadmobile that I bought used for a song, but I love it.

P.S., welcome back to the blogosphere.

As a Brit I can confirm that although we call a back yard a garden and a station wagon an estate car we most certainly do not call a tent a marquis! A marquis is a title given to a British noble. You may be thinking of a marquee, which is the term we use for the large tents used in open air events such as garden parties. The Queen has a number of these each year, so conceivably you could see a Marquis inside a marquee!
