Wallace Stroby aka, Wild East, Asbury Park, 1982
There's a series of photos from Asbury Park on the New Yorker web site here. 'Evocative' doesn't seem to do the 1979 series justice. My shot of Wally, a Long Branch native, was taken on the coldest day I've ever experienced...and I lived in Chicago for 19 years. It was so cold, the OM-1 power winder, a cheap hair dresser's version of a motor drive, froze up. It's also why there's no one in the background.
A future writer in the making. This shot should be a part of that New Yorker series.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, those beautiful 85mm hunks of glass. Ditch your priapic zooms, I say, and go short!

ReplyDeleteOK, I went to the 1980 pics at the NY'er site... see the girl in pic #1 with the big hair, my 1980 hign school girlfriend had the very same bikini. Crazy. "Sandy the fireworks are hailing over Little Eden tonight / Forcing a light into all those stoned-out faces left stranded on this Fourth of July".
ReplyDeletep.s. - I would give my little finger to go back for one night...

ReplyDeleteIn my mind that is easily the best Springsteen song out there and that's certainly saying something.
Those New Yorker pictures are tremendous. Sad that the country shown in those pictures no longer seems to exist or maybe the camera is just telling me lies. Maybe it never did.
Great photo of Wally - he actually looks cool (no pun intended with the cold weather). So when are you heading south to find some cooler weather? DMW
ReplyDeleteDMW- mid Aug is the plan. Do I need to wear flannel?
ReplyDeleteDo you EVER wear flannel? Oh, wait, there is all kinds of flannel, not just the plaid, hunting shirt type! It is getting hotter as we speak - 97 this weekend - who knows what it will be like in mid August, maybe we'll have a hurrican? Can't wait to see you again. DMW
