What are your ten favorite films have you ever posted it? What are your ten favorite films for 'look'? Like say, Cary Grant in to Catch a Thief, what?
I just thought about it because it would be neat to see some of these 'trad' looks 'in motion' I am a slob and I get clothes dirty easy... what are some recommendations for a cheap cool trad look....
Enough samba, lets start picking that brain again!
Does anyone wear saddle, or camel colored anything anymore?
I like that photo. I can't put my finger on why. Maybe because it's on location and looks a lot less stiff than photo shoots of the day. I suspect it's one reason you like it, too.
I wonder if in 2059 people will look back at pictures of us and marvel at how effortless our style was... if things deteriorate between now and then, as much as they have between 1950 and now, then I am sure they will be marveling... i shudder to think what they will be wearing, however.
Cretins-- no pocket squares... Seriously though, did you notice the guy on the right has argyle socks echoing the colors of his tie? And it all looks so effortless.
Mr. Brown: Sorry, but the dress standards then were infinitely superior to now. I know-I was there. The picture is lovely-very relaxed and natural looking, almost insousciant, despite the attention they placed on attire.
Interesting photo. These blokes look like a couple of up-to-no-gooders. I don't trust them. The mischievous grins. The waistcoats. The suspiciously square-toed shoes on the chap in the foreground. The dog. (I once dated an insane ex-escort devoted to her Sheltie, so I am not partial to them).
At first I liked the tie and socks on the right. Not a match (always bad) but an echo (always good) as pointed out by Michael B.
I'm not a vest/waistcoat kind'a guy but do admire them. I think Britches of Georgetown, the old retailer from the 80's and 90's, is going on here big time. And of course some Paul Stuart. Reverse pleats would say 'Not Trad' to the Trad hard core but looking at how folks dress today, who's to say what's trad and what's not? If Trad is short for traditional...then these guys are certainly Trad.
Flusser's Mark Rykeen told me that more money was spent on men's clothing last year than at any other time. Who'd have guessed. He added, more crap sits in the back of men's closets. Unworn. Men don't know what to buy and are sold by companies who know even less.
And yes, there were folks who dressed like crap in the 50's but there was an educated buyer and salesperson who knew how to squeeze a buck through the basics of classic dress. Grey flannel trousers, an odd jacket or two, a big investment in shoes (you'll never leave them anywhere and it'll take a long time to outgrow them)and a tie that can be worn with anything. That's what I was taught as a Brooks Bros salesman.
Today a retailer's idea of buying 'outfits' - - a tie matched to a shirt matched to a suit matched to a pocket square - -is not only laughable...it's damned expensive and requires a very big closet.
Emboldened by the liquid courage of their experimentation with Country Club Malt Liquor, twin TKE's Sam & Dave have been enjoying 3AM phone chats with hot singles in their immediate area. They've invited Bambee & Sharleemain to the club's apres-church Sunday luncheon to meet the folks and Sis's prospective fiance, Jay "Bird" Rockefeller.
A subsequent suprise hay ride follows if the gals exhibit perfect orthodontia, subdued voices, restrained gesticulation and graceful digital dexterity with appropriately selected cutlery whilst maintaining apparently sincere eye contact with Mumsy!
The lads are justly proud of their recent sartorial acquisitions from the Amish Seminary's Ye Olde Etonian Shoppe, Aristo-Weskits(TM) from the UK's Nigel Westminster Ltd. Their stuffed sheltie, Farquar, accompanies.
You can chat up hot singles like Bams & Sharl in your area, too. It's free, just dial 555-TRI-XRUS.
Could have walked off Campus grounds today... yeah.
We did some nice vests at BGT, but I don't remember a tattersall. And I would've bought it. How nice to see a photo of two men whose shirts aren't filling the gap between the bottom of a shrunken vest and a low rise trouser.
which one is you?

Lassie certainly helps.

Victorian Steampunk Airship pirate?
ReplyDeleteStraight hot. Dig the vest. I'm going to try a modern version of my quilted barbour vest under my harris tweed this fall - thoughts?
ReplyDeleteI have a dog like that, and I love her to death! The blue jacket/saddle vest/grey slacks, etc looks great - that would be my pick. Thanks Tin.

Love it. They look like two fine men of Innisfree from my favorite movie ever The Quiet Man.
ReplyDeleteOr, perhaps, the President and VP of the Pinehurst Club. I seem to recognize the corner of that building, albeit from a lower angle...

It's almost astounding to think that these two fellows could walk down the street today and still look well put together, albeit a bit dandified.

So John Belushi was more than a compulsive antisocial demiurge.
ReplyDelete(Thanks for the reminder.)
Those are killer socks on the guy on the right.
ReplyDelete1950's had it's fair share of shockers, just as we do now and there will be plenty in the future.
ReplyDeleteThere has never been a time when everyone was well dressed - it is the exceptions that keep the standard up, not the general swathes.
Peering back in time with rose tinted eyewear is going to achieve nothing in changing that.
I don't usually like so much mixing, I prefer minimal. However these gentlemen look very 'weekend in the country' stylish.
ReplyDeleteThat's it, TinTin! This fall I will have to get a matching dog for each outfit! Brilliant. ME
ReplyDeleteI'm picturing the image on the facing page of the magazine...the local sheep population, worried looks on their furry faces.
