18th Century Seersucker & Bow Ties

Annie's Bow...

...with a different kind of seersucker.

Nice pattern matching.

Doneckers in Lancaster - A very special store recently closed

I love details like these...
...and these. Seersucker's great, great, great grandfather.

Annie Wilson gave me a bow tie and all I had to do was complete a questionnaire. Is this blogging thing sweet or what? Check out her site(s) and be sure to give her bow ties a look. If you're a bow tie kinda guy. I like her style and her blog. For a Californian she has amazingly good taste.

I'm getting a sense of the late 18th - early 19th century although I don't really know why. Maybe it's the embroidery of this formal great coat from France. Annie hand makes every bow so each one is unique. Hard to go wrong with that. Hard to go wrong with $28 as well. You can see what's available here.

Great coat photograph from, What Clothes Reveal, by Linda Baumgarten.

  1. That's a fantastic variation on seersucker. Ben Silver offered something similar this year (though it seemed like a semi-constructed POC with already working sleeve buttons that then precluded tailoring). As with most things at BS, still rather $$$$.

I remember this coat from the pictures at the shore (and the Oxxford oxford from the beer pictures).

I had heard of Doneckers, though only as a furniture store.

  3. In the words of a now "famous" blogger:
"If loving this is wrong, I don't want to be right...."

(hmmmm, wonder who said that????? And I got blasted for the Honesty quote....)

I love this bow tie~~she's brilliant.

  4. If I may beg to differ, T2 . . . I just can't get behind the idea of a button-down collar and a bowtie.

  5. Anon 12:52, it's a classic combination.

Tintin, the seersucker has me transfixed. What a beaut.

  6. Hmm. I prefer a button-down collar with my bow ties.

To each his own, eh wot?

    P.S.: Wow! What a jacket!

  7. I love that suit - it's a break from the everyday blacks and tweed - but it maintains a traditional look. I'm a sucker for any unique interpretation of a classic design - especially when the design combines two classics. That bo-tie is nice, but dangerously distracting, although against pink and seersucker it's no problem.

  8. The embroidery on those 18th century must have worn out many a seamstress. But what the hell, we have more seamstresses. Let them eat cake.

On the button down with bow tie controversy. It's not wrong certainly but it weakens the purity of the tie by producing a somewhat cluttered effect at the throat. Sorry Tintin, but the bowtie you illustrate is hideous. Purely personal opinion of course, no one's taste is any better than anyone elses!! The Seersucker jacket is nice however.

  9. Anon- That's a great memory you have. Doneckers was amazing. Sitting out there in Lancaster county it was something very unique. But fear not. They have a huge outlet now. It breaks the heart.

Lag Prep- I expected no less from you.

TRVS- You're not gonna find this kit at Means Whorehouse. I never blast honesty around here. Affected tools, yes. Honesty, never.

    Anon- Are you from Romania?

E&E- Thank you for educating Anon from Romania.

    Family Man- Me three.

Greg- The bow is out there but that's why I like it. It's different in its handmadeness. If that's a word? It is now! And it has story. Annie in SF made it for me. Not someone making $10 a month in a far away land.

Joe - Weakens the purity? It's a button down and this is TradGod speaking to you. In my ten commandments number three is, "Though shall always wear a button down collar with a bow tie." Now go and sin no more.

  10. "It's a button down and this is TradGod speaking to you."

You'll be breaking out the spats this winter then Tintin! I've always read the Tradgod had a bit of schizophrenia on this topic so I'll have to continue to sin buttonless I'm afraid.

  11. TinTin-
The ticket pocket on the seersucker jacket was the giveaway.

  12. The fabric of the bow-tie also looks unique - and any kind of throwback to true craftsmanship is wonderful.

  13. Donecker's! I'm a native Lancastrian and the mayor, noted for his love of bow ties, shops there for his neck wear needs.

I've been meaning to stop by, this will be some added impetus.

  14. Gregorius- Sadly, Doneckers is no more. I've been told it closed but there's a load of cheese in the outlets. It breaks my heart.
