You Are What You Drive...

1967 MGB

If so, then my first car makes me hard to start, not very fast and unreliable.

.....So you have Lucas (Prince of Darkness) electrics....but you looked cool.....the wires looked great (but hard to clean)....women stared at you....you can't have everything!

  3. I once went out with a boy who drove a racing green MG. That makes me shallow, easily impressed and overly concerned with image.

Whatever. I borrowed it and was given phone numbers at traffic lights.

    Ah, the olden days.

  4. That was the very car my Mother was driving when I was born. Green. After that, my Dad drove it and tried to give her a Dodge... kicked a huge dent in the side and walked back in the house... yah, everyone was clear about who she was and what she wuld drive after that...

  5. Had a similar ride, a 197oish FIAT ( FIX IT AGAIN tONY) WITH ROSEWOOD STEERING WHEEL AND RACING STRIPES. I should have kept hold of that car; much fun and drastically fun to race about in!

  6. So funny, but true. Even though those small imports are cool, I can't get excited because they are too impractical. I will most likely always be driving the paid for, four-door sedan. But my Mom had a '66 Mustang when she was the hip high school Spanish teacher in a small town. I will live through her.

  7. Joe and Alice- I was 17 and didn't get any stares and was a long way from smooth. Some things never change.

ELS- This one was red with the black leather seats with red piping. I loved the seats more than the car.

Blushing- Snickety gear shift was nice but the ride was pretty ruff. I'd drive 8 hours home from Ft Bragg and by the time I got home I could swear my ass was somewhere back in Florence, SC.

La Maison- 850 or 124? I liked 'em both. Especially the wood dash. The X1/9 I owned almost turned me against Italians it was so bad.

  8. I wouldn't have cared if it ran or not. I wanted a British Leyland product so badly at 16...

But I wanted a Spitfire. Even less chance of it actually moving out of the driveway.

  9. Cathleen- Time to live through yourself. Haven't you always dreamed of driving a convertible in Paris with the wind blowing through your hair?

M Lane- Why do I suddenly wanna listen to Marianne Faithful?

Anyway, Spitfire! Brilliant. Beautiful car. Sexier than any MG (cept the A and the TC). Complete basket case but as we've discussed- the coolest commercials with Jean Shepard doing the voice over as a Spitfire a/c takes off next to the car. What ad man did that one?

....Sorry can't agree...the spitfire was a girlie car ....the only Triumphs that looked really good were the TR 3 and 4....the 4 like the other real classic the Healey 3000 had a hell of roar.......other contenders: the Daimler Dart (didn't sell many of those in the US but it was a nice motor) or the Sunbeam Alpine.....I saw a very nice Alpine for sale in LA a few weeks ago.

  14. 1975 TR6, apple green. I loved that car, and how I looked in it (ELS, I share your assessment). That made me a fun, sometimes unreliable, and a little bit fast. Old days indeed.

...The 4 thru 6 were visually fairly similar...they all looked great in BRG or Red...big engines...loads of torque...loved em

  16. First car....MG Midget
    Second car...Triumph Spitfire
    Third car....Ford Pinto

All three were gratifying and humbling in their own special way.

  17. My (really) first car was a 1955 Buick Special - hard to start, not very fast (but could push down trees), and unreliable - as well!

I'd much rather be unreliable in that MGB.

  18. Not long outta colettge, somewhere in Caroline. Friend and Ta'er shared a duplex. Winter. Semi-sober, I'd started my car early AM and returned inside while it warmed. Friend in newish burgundy MGB coupe returned from nocturnal tomcatting, parked behind one, and went immediately to bed. I hopped in my car and hurriedly headed to work - backed into the front of his MGB. Well, it wernt there 5 minutes before. $Duh$

  19. Dang, I drive a '98 Mercury Mystique...no kidding. No, really. That would make me a little old white guy living in a central Florida gated community golfing my days away.

    Now that's scary.

    Love the low angle shot.

  21. I learned to drive in a '67 Barracuda, painted a shimmering navy blue with white leather interior. A beautiful tank of a muscle car...alas, my first car -owned- was a teal 1996 Saturn four door with a styrofoam engine that appeared to have been spray-painted silver. Does that mean I'm a lesbian?

  22. This was my first car as well...and I still have it and drive it on summer days when the sun is out. Having a brother willing to maintain the mechanical aspect makes it happen. Thanks Matt!
