Based on a short story by Phillip Roth. Doesn't end well but most movies I like don't. In that genre of The Graduate and the lesser known but brilliant, Heartbreak Kid (1972) with Chas Grodin and Cybill Shepard. Ask any of the old farts around here -- they'll tell you.
Ali McGraw never looked better...watching her play tennis in this film is a treat in itself. Jack Klugman's character is pricelss...one of his lesser known roles. For some reason, this whole movie reminds me of the Bar Mitzvah film made in " The Apprenticship of Duddy Kravitz."
Mainline Sportsman.....I've never seen this movie but surely nothing could equal the shock/horror of the avant garde bar mitzvah film from Duddy.....Duddy btw is a great movie that is not well enough known.
You've whetted my appetite Tintin.....I'll have to get a copy of the movie since it all seems to be about class differences.....a subject of endless fascination.

I grew up madly in love with her. I'm still desperately seeking her doppelganger... in looks, style and above all femmininity. European exotic yet so wonderfully American... Where have these all gone?

Great movie, so I guess I'm an old fart too. The brother and his goodbye columbus album was too funny. I have to say that Ali Mcgraw would never have gone out with Richard Benjamin. Steve McQueen? yes! Well, maybe one date. He's pretty funny. Good memories, Tin Tin.
I work with several New York Jewish intellectuals. I was confused, flustered and annoyed in our staff meetings because of all the time spent on minutiae, kvetching, interrupting others and, sometimes, even yelling. I wasn't sure how to put my finger on this, to me, un-2000'ish work behavior, plus I felt discriminatory, which I hated. These were very confusing days. Then, I rewatched "Goodbye Columbus" - Among other things, most of my questions were answered by the scene of yelling and screaming at the dinner table. A weigh had been lifted. I wasn't an insensitive racist after all - Our behavior at meetings was merely a cultural difference.
I never heard of this movie but now I'm intrigued.
