Not Just Any: Shawl Collar Cardigan

"M" Magazine, October, 1986 (photo credit: Kyle Ericksen)

"The sweater was PRL (Polo Ralph Lauren) in Argyll & Sutherland Highlander stripe wool. Any time you see an unusual shawl collar cardigan, 90% chance it's PRL. It's been done in fair isle, gun check, chalk stripe, reggie stripe, awning stripe, indigenous American, you name it. Wool, cashmere, linen, cotton, jute...." Jamgood

  2. I come from a cold place. I love wool. I love sweaters. Ralph usually does them well. As long as he doesn't put any fake crap on them. I am thinking that as one gets older, sweaters have to be simpler and subtle otherwise the sweater looks like it's wearing you. Right? Wrong?

I prefer sweaters knit by somebody I know. Although knitting is a very popular hobby these days, nobody, in my entire life, has ever really wanted to knit for me. Even my own mum. They don't want to knit what I want to wear, and I don't want to wear what they want to knit. Heartbreaking. Moths! Moths have broken my heart too. More than once.

I am surprised there are not more bespoke knitters around. How hard can it be? Some patterns, measurements, a knitting machine even and a serger. Colours the way you want'em. Could be good home based business. For somebody. I guess.

  4. I'd gladly take this over the Cucinelli troop pictured below.

I once read an interview with Armani where he was quoted as saying, 'Italians are like sheep in fashion; they replicate store windows in their dress. Whereas, the Anglo is an individual style.'

And having lived in Italy, I'm inclined to agree.

  5. Anon- C, E or S class?

Oyster- Interested in a job? I can pay half a cent a word and all of it must be attributed to me. Great comment. Just knock off spelling color the wrong way. It's half a cent a word -- no matter how long it is.

Mail Line- Waterfowl Club? You're pulling my chain? Do you have a flag?

Matthew- Italians have surrendered well over the last hundred years. And they always looked good doing it.

  7. Matthew - I only spent a semester abroad, but I'd have to say that Armani's quote is dead on, at least for the Italians I met.
