Trad Rules (# 33) LL Bean Boots

Women and children may wear blue, green and red Bean boots. Men wear brown. Velcro Bean boots are only worn in Florida where natives never learned how to tie shoes.

  1. That's right, we Florida natives can only slide our feet in and out of shoes, flipflops are good for that, the Bean Moc is pretty good for that too, but you've illustrated the mess that can happen with the shoestrings; see, you made it way more complicated than it needed to be, were you tryin to turn a Bean Moc into a Bean Gumshoe? You might need a Gumshoe in your lineup.

  2. Nice shot of the Super Secret Slip-On Knot Lacing.
Being a Midwesterner, I had to discover this on my own.

  6. Hey, that's cold! I remember exactly when I was first able to tie my shoes. It was sometime in high school. Or maybe college...

  7. Thanks for the knot close up I'll have to try it. My favorite are my 8" slip-ons, at my age bending over to tie the others can be dangerous.

  8. assuming those are all yours, what possessed you to buy the velcro ones? Was that back in your Florida days, when you forgot how to tie your shoes?

  9. Oh my, I thought we had every iteration of that boot pass through the house...velcro?? For really real?

  10. Have you seen the OD canvas ones at Bean Signature? (What am I saying, I'm sure you have.) They're a great alternative to the original, and are classic enough to look like Mr. Bean initially spec-ed them that way decades ago.

  11. Yes, yes and yes. Everything you just said is true. The only thing I would add is that one never ever buys any other brand of Bean boot. That's just wrong.

  15. Seems to me that brown is too limited.

Those colors are so new -- last ten years or so? -- that you really can't make up such hard and fast rules. Part of tradition is change.

  16. You have inspired me to go into the attic and pull my Bean Boots out. I haven't seen them since college...which unfortunately was 20 years ago. It's time for them to make an appearance! Thanks for your cool posts!

  17. Is it possible to remove the logo from the back of the boot, or will it damage the boot?

  18. Love these pics but perhaps Floridians are more likely to wear one of these
    and avoid the boiling feet!

  19. Are those 12 eye or 16 Maine Hunting Shoes? And you say you have a problem with shooting birds... Pshaw.

  20. Looking for a fresh pair to replace my college stalwarts, I recently called Bean and asked the difference between their Bean Boots and their Maine Hunting Shoe.

The rep went into how the two fit differently, one meaning to be worn with mid-weight socks, the other with heavyweight socks, ordering sizes and half sizes up and down and...I don't remember the rest.

What I do remember her saying, however, was that the rubber composition of the Maine Hunting Shoe is made to be more durable than that of the Bean Boots, "since we assume you'll be walking more in heavy brush, fields, creeks, and so on." I was happy to base my decision on that bit of practical information, since "Bean Boots" always seemed a little too cutesy anyway.

  21. I'm not sure how happy I am with how you have equated women with children. To be honest it sounded something like this: 'Women and children can wear the frivolously-colored Bean boots. Men wear the distinguished, serious, and traditional brown.'

  22. Anon- "I'm not sure how happy I am with how you have equated women with children."

I don't think I did. It is my opinion that a man should not wear brightly colored Bean Boots as the effect can be childish or effeminate.

  23. I must mention that Bean's has always assigned color as either men's or women's colors. The men always get the serious colors and the women are given the pastels, or in this case, the silly colors.

It's offensive to me that a company would make these kind of assumptions about color. As though gender might actually encroach upon visual territory. Well, I guess that it is men who possess the gene that produces color blindness. But still . . . there is something wrong about this penchant for determining who will like what. I know it's an odds thing, but it seems somehow less sure-handed, so to speak.
