What I love most about the images you've provided, is the majesty of the blue blazer. It's the tuxedo of casual-carefree social engagement. It's perfect (at least to me it is).
I'm sorry, Tintin, but having grown up near the water with rowboats, small day sailboats and touring kayaks, I don't care a whit for yachting culture. Some of the clothing, yes. Yachting, never.
Just ask yourself this: Could, or would anyone standing on that lawn actually "zinc" a keel? Would they even know what it means?
Nice flashback post, though. Went to Newport once. In fall. No one was home. I mean no one.
One of my Buddys has done this race numerous times. In my opinion it is a fairly ballsy undertaking. The pictures he has shown me from recent years depict most of the captains and crew looking pretty much same as the '86 shots. Lots of Nantucket reds and such...and many a rare, red Mount Gay hat paired with the blazer. I am shocked the Bermudian Club officials even let a guy in wearing flops...it just looks terrible. He races out of Rock Hall MD and Corinthian Yacht Club in Phila.and all his crew are well turned out a race after-parties. As usual, an enjoyable post. Thanks.
This post made me thirsty for a Gosling's and Barritt's D&S. As I'm in Australia, I'll have to settle for the Bundy version (which is better than no version at all.) A great post for those of us who grew up sailing in New England.
Anybody who types "sucks," "pimping it" and "dick brain" on a blog like this is only going to make an ass of himself, Mr. Anonymous. You haven't impressed anyone.
I have a friend that's retired Coast Guard who's done this race several times. A real cool guy, nautical wheeler all the way. Only wears boat shoes on the deck!
Cool post. Keep fighting the good fight, and congrats on recent publicity.
My uncle has sailed this race a lot since the 70's. I'm afraid even he might be in flip flops these days. Used to be tassel loafers with the Bermuda shorts, socks and the DB blazer though.
M was a great magazine. In the 4th photo: I used to swim with the guy on the right (in green/blue trousers) when I lived in Alexandria, VA: great guy. Good post, thanks for the memories; Bermuda is a unique place. When I sailed there from North Carolina I was psyched to pick up some great over-the-calf socks and crew neck Shetland wool sweaters.
Something has gone terribly wrong in the last 25 years....
ReplyDeletedamn you John Cowie. (inventor of flip-flops)
ReplyDeleteBest post ever?
ReplyDeleteThose shark pants in the third pic down are so killer! Anyone know who made 'em?
ReplyDeleteTo quote Judd Nelson (in Making the Grade): "Preppies must get beat up a lot..."
ReplyDeleteguy with the orange tie and blondish curly hair looks like a total douche. It would curious to see what he looked like now.
ReplyDeleteWe're headed to "hell in a hand basket" . . . :-) xoxo
ReplyDeleteWell, to be fair, there were a lot of poorly dressed crew in '86 and a lot of properly dressed crew this year, but oy!
ReplyDeleteSadly, I know flip flop guy #1.
Patsy- I never did the race but have done business in Bermuda for 20 years.
ReplyDeleteLast time I was there I was able to get Sea Egg to do a dinner at Dennis's Hideaway but that's another story.
I'm curious as to who you think dressed poorly in the 86 pics.
Oh no, sorry!
ReplyDeleteNo one in the pics from 'M' - from friends and family's snapshots.
Okay. Hey, let me know if you wanna share your pics of '86. I'm happy to post 'em.
ReplyDeleteFANTASTIC POST !!!

Thanks Tintin.

Oooh, let me see what I can liberate from the archives.
ReplyDeleteThose shark pants are by Maui and Sons. Surf attire from the 80s. About as ubiquitous and low brow then as JAMS.
ReplyDeleteTake Ivy SUCKS and you suck for pimping it dick brain!
ReplyDeleteGuy with the skinny orange tie, small collar, and DayGlo spattered pants looks like he just got off a tour with Hall and Oates.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, the 1986 blazers are brilliant. It's the fit more than anything else that catches my eye. Even the guy with the pleated chinos looks OK.
Wait, I'm sure its just me but the very last guy in the tan jacket looks like he's wearing a lavalava.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think any of these dudes would know what that is. Where is my kava bowl?

ReplyDeleteThe halcyon days of 1986. Today Ralph Lauren would have his obnoxious logo plastered all over the event.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures.
ReplyDeleteIs it me or have they gotten fatter?
Sorry, but the more I see these contrast photo's the more I notice the size differential.
Anybody else think there is something odd about it? It's not the age. The older gents in the 80's were slimmer too.
Comparing anything to what 'M' Magazine did in the 80's is unfair.

Gah! Is there ANYTHING worse than flip-flops!
ReplyDeleteActually there is something far worse... Crocs! They have always struck me as the kind of footwear they give to patients in the psych ward...
Don't even get me started about Birkenstocks....
Great pictures! Thanks for posting. Being a clueless European and female at that, can someone explain to me the long socks with shorts rules??
ReplyDeleteYes...best post ever.
ReplyDeleteSomething has happened between the passing down from father to sons...lost in translation.
ReplyDeleteAnd damn flip flops.
The MILF Hunter sails?
ReplyDeleteHuh

ReplyDeleteBrohammas -- Lavalava, beautiful.
