As a GS-4 I made $12,400 a year working as a seasonal park ranger at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island in 1984 thru 1985. It was the lowest paying and most enjoyable job I ever had. I'm glad I had a camera with me. These are all Kodachrome 64 taken with an Olympus OM-1 and a Canon F-1.

Another fascinating "you were there" insider's view. Being privy to events, even relatively minor ones like car races, intrigues, I think, just about everyone. You're one of the few shooters I know to take your camera out of "horizontal hold." Of course you do because you've been shooting seriously for decades. A few more for the portfolio!
ReplyDeleteCable-knit sweaters and hiking boots: yup, the 80s.

ReplyDeleteSpectacular picture of Manhattan rising.
ReplyDeleteI'll second that. Fucking-A, I miss those towers.
ReplyDeleteDB- I don't know if any of these were ever that good. But time has a way of putting a little patina and age to them. And then there are those frames that help a lot.
ReplyDeleteMatt- It really was. Thanks for the nice words.
Karena- It was a great job. I also took a slew of pics while working in a not too great job. Maybe this weekend.
Sluice Box- Waffle Stompers are over due for a return. Cue Scott Sternberg.
Anon- It was in Manhattan, cupcake.
Ari- It's my favorite too.
Stew- It means a lot to me. 15 years later I was working for Aon and looking down on Ellis and the Statue from WTC 2. Felt like I had come a long way.
