When the Colonel took me to see Bob Dylan in Milan a couple of years ago (am squirming still with pleasure at every word I just wrote), he was horrified at the general sloppiness and lack of style displayed there. Ditto Rome. Luckily Venice recently restored some faith in the Italian sartorial stakes.
If you could arrange for the chap on the front page to pop over to discuss this with me further, that would be useful. Chilling the Prosecco....
This Italian Trad thing you're on is interesting, but I think it's a style best left to the Italians. English clothes look good on scrawny Englishmen, and American clothes look good on beefy Americans. Just an opinion.
Michael- Me too. R. Bryan's stories about the shoots are books unto themselves. Hmm. Maybe I should stop thinking out loud and do something.
cg- Man, I'd love to be you for just one day in Rome.
Nick- You sound like you write for GQ. No offense but the whole point is to take what works best (for you) from everywhere. Thom Browne and M Bastian are American - They ain't gonna work for a beefy (me) Americano. But Brioni and Borrelli do work for me but maybe not for a 6', 40 Reg American.

I see the dress shirt argument predates you and me...
ReplyDeleteELS- That chap's 23 years older. You may wanna break out some prune juice for him.
ReplyDeleteEnzo- It would appear so. I love Borrelli shirts but they don't love me.
I love these M posts......Takes me right back.
ReplyDeleteThe article said it quite well: Italy has more fashion victims per capita than anywhere else.
ReplyDeleteQuite...but I worked in Silicon Valley, and there weren't any cute girls wearing mini sun dresses and riding a bicycle there.
You see them ride by on this busy street in that odd cycling position that only Italian girls do so well...well you'd forgive anything at that point.
I'm enjoying these articles on Italy. Hope you do other countries as well.

ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to be the kind of guy that could wear the "ubiquitous short coat" well. Alas~
ReplyDeleteBTW, where the sam hell is Brummagem Joe these days?

Stew- I was gonna ask where you've been? Yeah, short jackets make me look a like a Soviet politician from Estonia circa 1977
