Ralph Lauren Topsiders - The ShameFound these last year on sale. Hunter green with red and yellow trim. Ralph Lauren and made in the US of A. Asking price was $35o before being marked down to $100. I should'a bought two pair...I'm wearing these out. A beautiful shape unlike any topsider I've ever owned. Very comfortable. I salute the designer and must find out which US company made these. Hey, Tater! Have any G-2 on these? I'm looking for a life time supply.

Insurance against what loss? One's mind??? Those shoes would be adorable on a little girl. But on a middle-aged man? Frightening. An insult to tri-colored tortellini. And it gives one pause to think where you were wearing those, bare legged, in the middle of a work day.

ReplyDeleteNot a bad looking shoe at all. I'd wear them on a boat or at the beach, but not in the city. They have a Rasta-type color scheme going on. Also, they are more like a camp moc than a boat shoe.

Just remember, it wasn't always flatware - once it was fashion (I will not disparage your newly highly questionable understanding of the term) and you won't be hard to find wearing those shoes.

When boating, I have always found barefoot works best. Shoes are for shore.
I like them...then again, I live in Jacksonville. Phred on a boat? Surely you jest...btw, southern style cornbread is headed west as we speak, and not that stuff from a box that tintin endorses. This is the real deal, straight out of a cast iron skillet that was hot enough to take down a, well, take down a double wide.

Used to go barefoot on boats, too. Then I just got tired of losing toes and skin on sharp objects on deck (drinking on a boat makes everything sharp for my poor bare feet)...now, with boats and beer, I'll wear high-heels if I have to...

CG- Bare feet work on a lazy cruiser like a 41 Morgan but if you're racing on a Tartan 10 you gotta have something on your feet. The new Sperrys seem to crap out faster than ever when they get soaked in salt water--which is why it helps to wash 'em off in fresh water but I never do.
Turling- I guess I know why these things went on sale.

ReplyDeleteI have been out of the RL loop for a few years, but we had been making some American handsewns with Ansewn in Maine. They were really beautiful, but did not get any play in the market at the time (earlier half of this decade).
ReplyDeleteI had heard rumors that Ansewn had gone under or was purchased by another American shoe company like Allen Edmonds. It's a shame if such a great resource of truly handsewn mocs would be no more.
Anyone know anything on Ansewn's fate?
Ansewn (Bangor, Maine) was resurrected by Alden as Highland Shoe and Belt circa 2004. Please reference above, purty clear. That web site home page has not changed in ages. May be defunct. I think PRL first used Ansewn in the late '80s or early '90s. My second guess'd be Quoddy.
