The Covert Coat

I'm not an ascot kinda guy but I never pass them by when I see one under twenty bucks. Polo outlets in Florida are lousy with them. I guess they're not a whole lotta dads vacationing in Orlando who want an ascot. "Hey, Dad! Nice ass-cot."

I like the tight weave of covert cloth plus the tell tale railroad stitching at the sleeve and the hem. It's warm but light. Perfect for travel and you can wear it with damned near anything.

The hacking pockets with ticket pocket scream England but the plain collar (no velvet) tones it down considerably. A tattersal or gun check shirt helps with the horsey origins and this high v neck from Barbera covers up a lot of the ascot which keeps it from banging 12 on the Alpha Hotel meter.

You see covert coats everywhere in London but not so much here in the States and they wear like iron thanks to that weave. They are not cheap and it's getting harder to find ones made in the UK. Here's a tip. Check out eBay U.K. You might be surprised.

That's a mean combination of color, pattern and texture.Sometimes you get it right without even trying, sometimes you get it perfect. That's perfectly right...

I got my covert coat at English Country Classics in Middleburg, VA. They have lovely tweed jackets as well-all Brit stuff.

tintin: nice pattern/solid combo....I don't agree about the velvet collar, it's what gives the covert it's fizz and if you've swallowed the camel of the ass-cot why struggle with the velvet gnat...you're right about covert cloth being iron...my pa who was a civil engineer and managed some big projects had all his work suits made in it...concrete and rebar proof.

The sorta chap that wears this coat has read Life of Johnson front to back more than once and thinks nothing of donning it to shoot squirrels on the moors.

Interesting - ascots - maybe in the Polo Shops or the better shops on Park Ave. in Winter Park. What caught my eye was the shirt and sweater! Choice!

For what it's worth new British made coverts seem to sell for around $750....this is a nice example that a relation of mine who lives in London bought recently after shopping around.

Joe- You don't think the velvet collar is a bit wide boy?

The N&L is nice. I always liked the Cordings covert but last I was in the store the tag says made in Romania. There's a ton of 'em on Jermyn St - usually on sale in the $500 range. But a vintage Cordings or bespoke covert from the row would be my preference for a 2nd.

....You could say that about a lot of men's clothing flourishes couldn't you?...I don't struggle with it...I did the link to NL because I asked my son who lives there what a decent Brit made covert was these days and he said that serendipitously he bought one of these last fall after checking out all the OTP's available most of which he said looked like shit(inc Cordings which costs $750)....a bespoke coat like this would cost two grand sterling on the row!....btw I don't know whether it's the new pic attach method but this site has slowed to glue speed.
